About

I am a sculptor who creates both large, modular, site-specific installations and smaller sculptures, sizes range from up to 5 meters in height to an object you can hold in one hand. I have a feminist practice and I am a self-taught welder who primarily works with steel. Sculpture is constructed by me in my home studio. My art draws reference from the geometry found within mid-century design, encompassing, architecture, interior design and the domestic. Childhood memories of my father working as a draftsman during the 60s and 70s, and his constant work over decades as a furniture designer and maker also inform my art practice. Many of my sculptural works engage a feminist critique to explore and challenge the histories of women whose work has been marginalised or erased from these related narratives. Some of my smaller works take their inspiration from fragments of design that become abstracted when removed from original context.

Works on paper are also created, using gouache, ink and carbon paper and I use photography as another medium to interrogate aspects of architecture and design. I have also developed sculptural programs for children for TarraWarra Museum of Art and MUMA, Monash University.

I have been in many group and solo exhibitions, showing art throughout Australia and in Milan and Berlin. I have been shortlisted for multiple award-shows and have been presented with several awards. My work has been shown at Monash University Museum of Art, Cross Gallery, Bunderberg, Queensland, The Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Craft Victoria, Yering Station, Fringe Furniture, Kings ARI, Bus Projects, Montsalvat, Incinerator Gallery, Perth Centre for Photography, Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne and the Melbourne Fashion Festival amongst many others. My art is held in collections within Australia and internationally.

Sculptures finished and in development can be seen on my Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/tracey_d_l/ which is a good resource for ongoing work.

Since 2016 I have had an ongoing collaboration with the feminist collective, “seV=n [artist collective]”. I also curate an Instagram account called, “this is not a man-date”, to show the work of more women and non-binary artists. - https://www.instagram.com/thisis_nota_mandate/

I live and work on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. I acknowledge the traditional owners and the fact that Indigenous sovereignty has never been ceded. I pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
